Peirce College welcomes the Graduates’ GPS Conference to campus
Peirce College recently welcomed to campus a fantastic event coordinated by the Philadelphia Youth Network (PYN), a local organization committed to arming Philadelphia’s young people with the education, resources, and opportunities needed to become successful professionals.
The post-secondary student transition initiative event dubbed “Graduates’ GPS,” brought together students, educators, and Philadelphia employers to provide students with a roadmap for what comes after they earn their high school diploma.
Over 150 recent graduates or soon-to-be-graduates attended the celebratory event. The day marked their achievements thus far and pointed them toward new and exciting opportunities ahead. The School District of Philadelphia and PYN partnered to present this conference.
According to Chanell Bates, Project Manager of Educational Initiatives at PYN the Graduates’ GPS event was born out of the idea that a large population of students graduating from high school are without any real plan as to what to do next. In support of Mayor Michael Nutter’s education goals, the initiative connects students with resources and information that can help them make the next step of pursuing their college degree and/or employment.
We’ve talked before about Peirce’s commitment to educating Philadelphians and our support of Mayor Nutter’s education goals for the City of Philadelphia, which include increasing the graduation rate and doubling the amount of students who have a college degree in Philadelphia. With their complementary mission, an unwavering commitment to education, and the success of our city’s young people, PYN makes important contributions to these goals.
Mayor Nutter stopped by to welcome the crowd and congratulate the students on achieving one milestone and encouraged them to continue on in their educational journeys.
As the day’s activities got rolling, students attended workshops focusing on continuing education, career development, and personal development.
Representatives from five leading industries in the Philadelphia area (healthcare, hospitality, finance, building trades, and information technology) sat down over lunch for an informative discussion about the breadth and depth of opportunities in the region.
The day concluded with a “Future Fair” designed to further advise students on their next steps and connect them with additional information about college and employment opportunities.
The Future Fair included representation from Peirce College, PhillyGoes2College, and City Year, among other organizations and companies.
We were thoroughly impressed by the event and the inspiring group of young people in attendance! Philadelphia certainly has a bright future.
