Congratulations to our 2012 First Year Initiative Scholarship winners

As we’ve mentioned before, our First Year Initiative program (FYI) helps students in their first year at Peirce get adjusted to college life. The program is a support system, where more experienced students, faculty members, and staff members are available to answer questions about the college transition; classes; professors; and balancing school, work, and a personal life. And on top of this support system, our FYI program also offers a scholarship each year to two first-year students, helping them reach their academic goals.
This year’s winners are Cassandra Jean-Pierre and Velvia Gary! Congratulations to both of you on earning this achievement! I recently had the opportunity to speak with Cassandra about her future and what advice she has for other students.
Cassandra is currently enrolled in our Business Administration degree program, with a concentration in Management. She’s a Work-Study student in our Career Development Services Center, and is involved in the Student Leadership Program and the Ambassadors Club here at Peirce. Cassandra is also a Human Resources intern at the Philadelphia Zoo.
She attended our FYI masquerade potluck in October, where she learned about the FYI scholarship opportunity. At the same time, she was running out of financial aid and knew winning a scholarship could be the difference between finishing her education or putting it on hold. So she gathered two reference letters, wrote her essay with some assistance from the Walker Center, completed the other application requirements, and won!
Cassandra is set to graduate from Peirce with her bachelor’s degree in June 2013.
She also mentioned some great advice for other students considering applying for the FYI scholarship next year: “I’d like to let other students know that they can do it,” she said. “I think a lot of students get intimidated when they hear that they’ll have to write an essay, but we have so much help here at Peirce. I would encourage other students to go out for all the scholarships that they can, because people around you are here to help. Take advantage of that.”
