Military Students Find Opportunity in Peirce Criminal Justice Program
For 150 years Peirce has supported active military members and veterans in helping them get the education they need to advance or transition their careers. Just as we first served soldiers coming home from the Civil War, Peirce continues to offer opportunities to those who are coming back from Iraq and Afghanis tan today to get an education and transition into civilian careers.
A particular area we see military students thrive in is our Criminal Justice program. Military students who have served have gained valuable education and experience that compliments the knowledge and skills they’ll need as successful criminal justice professionals. Even outside of traditional police and corrections opportunities, many students find that their skills and passions transition well into a career into other criminal justice careers such as homeland security, which they can prepare for at Peirce.
For those who have served, they’re often able to apply much of what they’ve learned and experienced to receive credit for prior learning. One of the ways this occurs is by Peirce’s participation in the DANTES program, which allows students to take exams to determine what credits they’re able to receive. In addition to credits, Peirce offers many scholarships and other veteran education benefitssuch as the Post 9/11 GI Bill and the Montgomery GI Bill.
Once enrolled, veterans who attend Peirce find a lot of interactivity in the classroom and often share their relevant experiences in the field with students who have never been on the front line. They find a community supportive of military students and develop a comradery with both students and instructors who are also veterans.
As a former Navy Intelligence Specialist, I particularly enjoy educating and bonding with veterans. They make some of the best Criminal Justice Studies students; they are typically punctual, very poignant and articulate in their classroom conversation, meet their commitments (they do what they say they are going to do), and they lead by example. I constantly see them inspire their Peirce peers with their leadership and high standards.
