Overcoming Adversity, Kim Wright Is Now A Proud Peirce Graduate
Kim Wright is like many Peirce College students in the way that she would have liked to attend college shortly after graduating from high school, but, instead, she decided to work to support herself and her family. Earning a degree was always a goal for Kim, but she faced a good deal of adversity along the way and had to overcome challenges before the time was right to focus on her studies.
“I started working for the federal government in 1991 with the General Services Administration on Market Street in Philadelphia” Kim said. “I had hoped to enroll in college shortly after I started working, but unfortunately I suffered Kidney failure and had to have a transplant in 1992. My dialysis treatments and poor health prevented me from being able to start.”
Kim eventually became stronger and began to think about classes again, but had to put her plans on hold one more time when she inherited custody of her three-year-old granddaughter, who she raised and supported until her recent high school graduation.
“With my health issues for a while, and then with raising my granddaughter, I just didn’t have the time and energy to start school. But then in 2014 I was finally in a position where I could enroll at The Community College of Philadelphia in their Business program,” Kim said.
After her graduation from Community College of Philadelphia, Kim was active in the Graduate! Philadelphia network. She knew she wanted to continue her education and earn her bachelor’s degree, but wasn’t sure about what college or what program. Fortunately, Kim met Blake Scull, a Peirce College Admissions Specialist, at a Graduate! Philadelphia event, and knew that Peirce College would be her best fit.
“I learned about the Organizational Leadership program and loved it because it focuses on many different disciplines and doesn’t box you in to one particular area. I’ve learned many things in my courses that will help me climb the ladder at my job,” Kim said.
Since Kim works full-time on Market Street, she was able to attend most of her classes on campus in the evenings. She preferred the in-class experience but also appreciated the fact that if she had other responsibilities, she could attend class online. Kim excelled while at Peirce College, and proudly graduated with a 3.6 GPA on Tuesday, June 11, 2019.
Kim still works for the General Services Administration and will soon complete her 28th year with the company. She hopes that her bachelor’s degree will open new doors for her at work, and aspires to become a Contract Specialist within the GSA.
In her spare time, Kim loves to volunteer in and around Philadelphia, with her most recent service at the Broad Street Run last month. “I love to give back to the city that has given so much to me!” Kim said.
