How You Can Help This Holiday Season
With the holiday season upon us, now is the perfect time to give back to our local community.
Are you looking for a spot to volunteer or donate? Check out the list below for virtual or local events within the Greater Philadelphia Area:
The Angel Tree program of Greater Philadelphia (ends on December 20th) is working hard to serve families and children this holiday season. Consider making a contribution to The Salvation Army Angel Tree through this organization’s registry.
Adopt-A-Family: The Adopt-A-Family Program serves a limited number of families who are experiencing extreme hardship during the Holiday Season. Families are selected from The Salvation Army Corps Community Centers, hospitals, and referral agencies throughout the city of Philadelphia.
American Red Cross is part of the largest and most diverse service organization in the United States. They provide food and shelter in emergencies, assist members of our armed forces and their families, teach lifesaving skills, and more. All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people.
- Volunteer Opportunities: The American Red Cross provides a broad array of vital services to people in need in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Volunteers are a part of everything they do, and there’s a volunteer opportunity for everyone.
The Everywhere Project hosts weekly outreach opportunities every Saturday afternoon from 12 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Over the course of the day, volunteers hand out hot water, clothing, wound care and harm reduction supplies to anyone who visits the volunteer site. While the program runs year-round, the resources that the project provides will aid those seeking refuge from the seasonal cold. To register, visit the group’s online calendar and choose what date works best.
The Share Food Program fights hunger in the Greater Philadelphia area. Anyone in need of food assistance this holiday season can contact the program, which feeds hundreds of thousands of people in need each month. You can donate, volunteer or even get your company or organization involved.
Project HOME provides supportive housing and other services to unhoused people in the Philly region. Volunteering opportunities with Project HOME include writing a note of hope, neighborhood street clean ups, being a volunteer driver, sorting donations, or helping in the kitchen.
- Sugar, Spice, & Sprinkles – A Holiday Cookie Drive for Project HOME: Consider baking cooking for safe haven residents across Philadelphia. These locations include:
- St. Columba (West Philadelphia)
- St. Elizabeth’s Recovery Residence (Lower North Philadelphia)
- Sacred Heart Recovery Residence (North Philadelphia)
- Joyce’s Place (West Philadelphia)
- Cookies are asked to be individually wrapped and ingredients should be generic, such as granulated sugar, all-purpose or bleach flour, eggs, or (optional) milk. Seward Residence, 1515 Fairmount Avenue, 19130 from Wednesday, December 18 to Friday, December 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Veterans Multi-service Center (VMC) provides services, programs, opportunity and advancement to Veterans of the U.S. military and their families. You can donate money, purchase wish list items or volunteer.
- VMC Amazon Wish List: The wish list list is in-kind donation to support the Veterans Multi-Service Center (VMC).
Animal Care and Control Team (ACCT) Philly is the region’s largest animal care and control service provider, serving the City of Philadelphia by contract. ACCT Philly manages the city’s animal shelter facility in North Philadelphia handling nearly 18,000 animals, from dogs and cats, to small animals, reptiles, birds and wildlife, annually. You can donate money, volunteer or foster an animal.
- ACCT Amazon Wish List: The list is updated often, including the top needed items to help ACCT keep a safe and enriching environment for the animals in their care.
