Maximizing His Credits, Tim Opas Seamlessly Transferred His Associate Degree to Peirce
For some college students, selecting a college major is not as cut and dry as it is for others. While some students know from a very young age that they might want to study health care, law, or computers, there are others who may have many different interests, which can lead to a more difficult time deciding on one area of focus. That was the case for current Peirce College student Tim Opas.
Tim knew that he had an interest in general business principles, but he also wanted a well-rounded experience. To provide himself with a solid educational foundation and to keep his options open in case he found something that really caught his interest, Tim enrolled as a Liberal Studies major at Montgomery County Community College, one of Peirce’s partner colleges.
“My experience at Montgomery County Community College was really positive,” Tim said. “I worked full time at a few different jobs while I was there, and I could apply a little bit from all of my classes to the work that I was doing.”
Tim knew that he wanted to continue his education and earn a bachelor’s degree in a business-related field, so he began seeking out his next educational step. Beyond offering the business-related degrees he was looking for, something that stuck out about Peirce College to Tim was the fact that Peirce works with its transfer partner schools to accept many (if not all) credits when moving from your associate degree to your bachelor’s degree.
“I knew I wanted to get my bachelor’s degree, so after I graduated from Montgomery County I checked out three or four colleges in the area. They were all telling me that they’d accept about 30 of my credits, but then I got an evaluation at Peirce, and the rest is history,” Tim said.
In all, Tim says he believes 57 of his 63 credits earned at Montgomery County Community College transferred to Peirce. “I was really happy that I wasn’t going to lose credit for the classes I had already completed. I had heard that Peirce was transfer-friendly, but to see that almost every one of my classes transferred was better than I had ever hoped,” Tim said.
Tim currently attends all of his Peirce College classes online, as he also works full-time for Mom’s Meals, a group that delivers meals to the sick and elderly. Tim also has a family, including a four year-old son and a nine month-old daughter. Though he says he would like to come in for class if his schedule permitted it, Tim is thankful that he can complete his course work on his own time, which allows him to work full-time to provide for his family.
When asked if he had any advice for an adult considering a return to college, Tim was very quick to say, “There’s nothing to lose! At the very least, try it. I hadn’t been in school for eight years, and I was definitely apprehensive. But it has been a really positive experience and better than I ever thought it would be.”
Tim currently carries a 3.48 GPA and is on track to graduate in 2020 with his Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership. He hopes to work as a Human Resource Manager after he graduates, as he says that he would love to help foster a working environment where people can be safe, well paid, and treated fairly on the job. Though he’s extremely busy with class, full-time work, and his family, Tim said he loves to squeeze in as much time as he can with his kids, as well as play basketball, watch movies, and listen to music.
