The Scholarship Wrap-Up: Final Tips For Funding Your Education

As we wrap up the mini blog series on scholarship opportunities at Peirce College, I have one more scholarship to highlight and final advice to provide. You have read about the Professor Edwin B. Miller Memorial Endowed Scholarship and the W.W. Smith Scholarship, but this month I shed light on the Alumni Scholarship Fund as another great way to finance your degree with college scholarships.

The Alumni Scholarship Fund was started as a support system by those who have already achieved their degree for those who are currently going through the process. This scholarship is available to both eligible undergraduate and graduate students.

The 2018 winners are three students already featured in our previous scholarship blogs. They are DeVonte Douglass, Jackmely Hernandez and Corey Hinson. Congratulations to all!

These students and a few others shared in the previous two posts their advice and guidance on applying and landing a scholarship. Now, check out a compilation of it all with additional resources and insight to take with you as you move forward with funding your education in the best and most effective way:

1. Talk to your Academic Advisor! They are a great resource for learning of scholarship opportunities, eligibility requirements and deadlines. They are your first stop on your scholarship journey.

2. Apply, apply, apply! You will always miss out on every scholarship you don’t apply for. So take that initial leap of faith and commit to applying to multiple scholarships. This will give you a better chance of receiving maximum financial support while earning your degree.

3. Tell your story! Once you decide to apply, make your applications personal and let those who are reading and selecting the winners get to know you. Talk about your inspiration, your struggles, your accomplishments and you will allow those reading to connect with you and fully understand who is applying for the scholarship.

4. Ask for help! Once you have written your story and your essays are complete, ask someone to proof-read them for you. Having an extra set of eyes on your work is never a bad thing. They may catch a small mistake you missed or be able to guide you on how to make your submission even stronger.

5. Recommendation letters are crucial! Carefully select who you will ask to write your recommendation letter(s). Give plenty of advanced notice to every contact and always have a back-up plan. Your boss or professors are great resources for recommendations letters as they can speak about you on a professional level.

6. Plan ahead! Give yourself plenty of time to write the essays, edit the essays, connect with those who you wish to have write your recommendations and finalize any last minute materials needed for the application. You will be a lot less stressed if you give yourself the gift of time.

After taking note of all these tips, be sure to check out Peirce College’s website for more scholarship information and check external resources such as fastweb.com for even more ways to finance your education.
