From Science to Paralegal, Kayla is following her new dream with Peirce College
When Kayla Good graduated from high school, she was certain she wanted to enter the medical field.
Fast forward to her first few college science classes, and everything changed. “Those science classes just weren’t for me,” Kayla says. “It wasn’t clicking, and I started to consider some other options.”
Kayla started to rethink her passions, which took her back to some of her former education. “I remembered how much I enjoyed a Government class in high school and over time, I became more and more interested in the law and court system,” recalls Kayla. Her interest eventually led to her enrollment at Harrisburg Area Community College, where she graduated in August of 2016 with an Associate Degree in Paralegal Arts.
But Kayla wasn’t done yet. She had big dreams and knew her next step, immediately after graduation from HACC, was to enroll in the Paralegal Studies program at Peirce College in September 2016.
Transferring was a clear and stress-free process for Kayla. She gives a special shout-out to her Enrollment Specialist, Blake Scull, who evaluated her transcript the same day she filled out her application. Kayla was thrilled to learn that every one of her classes except for Physical Education transferred to Peirce, getting her on the fast track to graduation in spring 2018.
Kayla feels like she’s getting the ideal background for her future career at Peirce College, especially because of how some of her professors incorporate visits from industry professionals into their coursework. She explains, “I’ve already learned so much from Professor Ivy Kempf. She adds a lot of value to her classes because she knows so many lawyers in the area and has them come in to talk to us. We had a law clerk speak to our class last semester and it was really valuable to hear about his experiences.”
Kayla currently works nearly full-time with Marshall and Smith Law Firm in York, PA. She says Peirce College is the perfect fit for her because of how demanding her professional and personal schedule is.
“Since I work more than 30 hours a week and take care of my five-year-old, my life is very hectic. It’s so beneficial for me to be able to take most of my classes online, but also come in to class sometimes to meet with instructors or if there’s a guest speaker,” says Kayla.
She adds that going back to college as an adult provides her with more drive and determination to earn her degree and continue on to law school. “My mom worked from 6:30 to 3:30 every day, and then went to school from 4:00 to 10:00 every day for 18 months. She’s my inspiration”.
At this point, Kayla is certain she’d like to continue her education by attending law school and hopes to one day work as an attorney specializing in criminal law and litigation. She loves to read and hike, but most of her spare time is currently spent studying for her LSAT exams. “I’d love to have more free time, but it’s tough to balance work and being a mom, all while earning a 3.6 GPA,” expresses Kayla.
We commend Kayla on her achievements and wish her the best of luck as she continues her education!
