Celebrating Peirce’s military past, present, and future on Veterans Day 2013
Peirce College was founded after the Civil War ended in 1865 to help Union military members prepare for civilian jobs. We’ve continued that rich tradition for 148 years by supporting military students and alumni in their higher education journey through scholarships, grants, career development support, and job placements after graduation.
We also employ a number of faculty and staff members whose job it is to support these military students. We’ve just strengthened that support by bringing Devon Vargason onto the team this session. She is the dedicated academic advisor for military students at Peirce College, ensuring that they stay on track, complete the correct requirements to continue receiving their benefits, and receive any other support they might need.
We welcomed Devon to the Peirce military family last Monday during our fourth annual Veterans Day brunch. We hold this brunch each year and invite the Peirce military community to come together over breakfast and coffee to discuss some of their experiences. President Mergiotti kicked the morning off by sharing a few words, and Peirce faculty member Marguerite Pannell spoke about her journey from the Navy to student, and then from student to faculty member.
Then our 25 attendees shared heartfelt stories of courage, hardship, and commitment from their time in the military and transitioning into civilian life at home. The brunch is also annually attended and support by Veterans Upward Bound (VUB), an organization that helps veterans prepare for college by emulating classes, workload, and rigor.
So military students, don’t hesitate to stop by and say hi to Devon! She’ll be happy to support you on your way to earning your college degree. It was a wonderful morning, and we’re thankful to all who came out for our Veterans Day brunch.
