Peirce College now offers Philadelphia’s only CAHIIM-accredited Health Information Technology associate degree

ACCREDITED: Our CAHIIM-accredited HIT degree
program will give graduates a leg up in their careers

I’m very excited to announce that Peirce’s Health Information Technology (HIT) program is now fully accredited by CAHIIM (Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education). This accreditation confirms that our HIT associate degree program meets CAHIIM’s standards for quality, achievements, and innovation. Furthermore, our HIT associate degree program is the only one in Philadelphia to achieve this accreditation.

We’ve covered why choosing an accredited degree program is so important to your education and job search on the blog in the past. Completing an accredited program shows employers that you have met the industry-standard benchmark, giving our program graduates a competitive edge during their job search.

For Peirce students, completing our HIT associate degree problem makes them eligible for American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Professional Certification Exams, including those required to obtain Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) and Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credentials.

We began pursuing accreditation for the HIT associate degree program in October 2010, right after the program was launched. We’ve gone through a rigorous, nine-phase process, including a comprehensive self-assessment of the program.

We culminated the process with a site visit from three representatives from CAHIIM, and then received board approval. Our goal was to secure full program accreditation in advance of our first graduating class. And we’ve done just that.

Peirce has no plans of stopping here — We plan to continue pursuing accreditation for our other Health programs. We’re officially in candidacy status for full-CAHIIM accreditation for our Health Information Administration degree program, and will focus on our Healthcare Administration program after that.

We want to thank everyone who helped make this accreditation possible. Many faculty and staff members worked long and hard through the application process. We also want to recognize our students, who have been enthusiastic throughout the entire process. Many even volunteered to speak with CAHIIM officials during their campus visit to discuss the HIT program and how it has helped their healthcare careers.

I want to leave you with an email I received from one of our HIT students, Kimberly Joyner, after she found out about the program’s accreditation.

“Just wanted to take a moment and say thank you. I am so grateful that the program is now accredited. I look forward to finishing the program with my degree and my AHIMA certification. Thank you to you and your staff for your hard work in making this accomplishment happen. Kudos to you and your staff!”

We’re excited that this accreditation will open our students up to even more career opportunities. We’ll be keeping you updated on the status of other Peirce accreditations here on the blog.
