Peirce grants honorary degree to J. Linford Snyder from class of ‘33

At most institutions, there are a few individuals that stand out and immediately capture attention across generations. At Peirce, J. Linford Snyder, Peirce College class of 1933, is one of those individuals.
You might recognize his name, because the College’s courtyard is named in his honor. Lin was also the first recipient of the Pride of Peirce Award, received the Peirce Trustee Award for distinguished service, and was an inaugural inductee to the College’s Wall of Fame.
While attending Peirce on a track scholarship in the 1930s, Lin and his classmates faced an uncertain future, preparing for business careers during the Great Depression. At the time, he had no idea where his professional pursuits would lead him, or how his life would remain connected to Peirce.
Over 80 years later, the Hatfield, Pa., resident continues to make his mark on Peirce College. So, in an honorary degree ceremony held at his church, Heidelberg United Church of Christ, we recognized Lin’s commitment to the institution with the conferral of a Doctorate of Humane Letters.
Peter Caputo, executive committee member of the Peirce College Board of Trustees, joined me to confer the honorary doctorate degree, which is Peirce College’s highest form of recognition, bestowed upon accomplished individuals who have made a significant impact on the institution.
Those of us who have been affiliated with Peirce for many years would be hard-pressed to find a better role model for a Peirce graduate than Lin. He possesses an extraordinary work ethic, typified by being the longest serving agent in Nationwide’s history with 70 years of service. He is a dedicated member of his community, as evidenced by 80 years of active membership in his church.
Most importantly, he has a generous spirit and is deeply committed to giving back to others. Lin and his wife Carolyn’s wonderful generosity over the years has helped hundreds of Peirce students achieve their dreams of earning college degrees and embarking upon successful careers.
Thank you, Lin, for the many years of support and dedication that you and your family have shown to Peirce College.
