When one door closes, another opens: Readmit student Nephetina Serrano shares her story
When one door closes, another opens: Readmit student Nephetina Serrano shares her story
Nephetina L. Serrano is the complete package — a mother, wife, daughter, mentor, and volunteer, just to name a few. But there was one thing missing, until recently, when Nephetina returned to Peirce College to follow her dreams of completing her education.
Today, Nephetina is pursuing her degree in Business Administration with a Management concentration, and she couldn’t be happier about her decision.
For Nephetina, the decision to return to school was about so much more than just finishing what she started. She is a firm believer that a college education not only opens the door for career expansion but also for personal growth and fulfillment, both equally important aspects of a full life.
Being able to advance her career and ultimately ensure a better future for her family is a strong motivating factor, but she recognizes now how much education contributes to her self confidence and self-worth.
“Education has given me more confidence in my own abilities and in who I am as a person,” says Nephetina. “This has positively impacted my professional confidence level. During interviews I find I’m calm and more sure of myself.”
The importance of role models, positive influences, and a support system has been instilled in Nephetina from a young age, as she grew up in a close-knit family environment. Her parents played an instrumental part in her success at school, and imparted on her a lifelong commitment to education. Today, she is still finding inspiration in her own mother who returned to school in recent years, earning her associate degree in Education, her bachelor’s degree in Social Services, and finally completing her master’s just this past December!
Today, Nephetina credits her wonderful support system, including family, friends, church, and her husband Richard (perhaps her biggest supporter) for giving her the confidence and drive to complete her degree. Another important source of support? The Peirce community, in which she has found that final piece of the puzzle that encourages her to keep going towards her ultimate goal — a degree.
Peirce’s commitment to working adult learners, and the flexible curriculum that is delivered both on campus and online, made Nephetina feel at home right from the start, and she has embraced the community and supportive environment she found at Peirce. The personal attention from faculty, small class size, camaraderie with her fellow classmates, and wonderful staff were the icing on the cake.
“I enjoy sitting with classmates who work every day and face some of the same challenges I do,” explains Nephetina. “We encourage one another to keep going.”
As she works towards her next personal milestone, Nephetina took a moment to share her experience with others who are juggling the responsibilities of being so many things besides a student. Below is a letter she wrote to fellow Peirce students who may have earned some credits in the past, but need that extra encouragement to return and complete their education:
My name is Nephetina and I am a daughter, a wife, a mother, a mentor, a volunteer, and as of recently, a Peirce College student. It is so gratifying to add “student” to the list again, as finishing my education has always been a dream of mine. I returned to Peirce in 2010 to complete my degree in Business Administration after being away for almost five years.
Many have asked me why, with all that I have going on, do I commute nearly two hours from my home in Delaware to attend class (especially when Peirce offers complete degrees online)? The truth? I do it for the experience.
I know you probably hold several titles like me – that is what makes Peirce College so special for people like us. The small, personalized classes here are filled with students you can relate to. They are juggling the multiple responsibilities we are, but are also making completing their education a priority. Together, we work together, laugh together and succeed together. And at Peirce, the support doesn’t stop there. The College has an entire student center with dedicated advisors, tutoring and academic workshops — available on campus and online — to help us achieve our goals.
Believe me — it’s not too late to fulfill your educational dreams. Find out more about how the supportive community at Peirce can help by contacting a member of the Peirce College Readmit Team. They will work with you to put your degree back on track. Call 888.GO.PEIRCE, ext. 9026, or visit www.peirce.edu/ReturningStudents today.
Best Wishes,
Nephetina L. Serrano
Thank you, Nephetina, for sharing your story of encouragement! If you are in Nephetina’s shoes and are thinking about continuing your education, we hope you take her advice: do it for yourself, the student that is hiding inside of you while you’ve been busy being so many other things. The accomplishment will be well worth the effort, and Peirce is here to help you along the way!
