U.S. News and World Report says Peirce is a college where older students can feel at home
Peirce made headlines this week as we were named one of the “10 Colleges with the Most Older Students” in a February 2011 list published by U.S. News and World Report.
It’s confirmation of something we’ve always known: Peirce is a college that really works for working adults. The student body has an average age of 35. But the numbers only tell part of the story.
To some, this might just look like another top 10 list. For Peirce students, it’s the acknowledgement of how hard the faculty and staff members have worked to consider the unique needs of adult learners.
Whether it’s the degree programs we offer, class schedules, the availability of online courses, faculty recruitment, career development opportunities, community outreach, or financial advising and support, we cater to working adults. Being recognized by U.S. News and World Report for our unique student body tells us that what we’re doing is working!
We don’t have to tell our students and alumni that returning to school while working, raising a family, and dealing with the day-to-day stresses of life requires a special kind of support. That support must come from family, friends, and of course, the college itself. Support from the college is integral to working adult learners’ success. Peirce students will tell you they found this in Peirce and that the faculty and staff here are dedicated to helping them get where they want to go.
Working adult students have already experienced the “real world.” In some cases, they’ve dealt with the toughest versions of it. So when they start (or return to) their academic journey at Peirce, they bring something with them that you won’t find at a traditional college campus.
These students understand what it will take to make strides in their careers, know that their sacrifices will bring great returns, and often have children who look to them for direction. This gives them a focus and drive that only comes with age.
Understanding that, and understanding what it means to live and work in Philadelphia, Peirce faculty and staff do everything in their power to make education work for our students. We help them figure out what degree will get them one big step closer to their goals, decide on a course load and schedule that will fit into their lives, offer academic support to make sure they get the most out of their classes, and make a plan to pay for it all. The result is an environment where working adult students can thrive more than they’d be able to anywhere else.
At Peirce, we’ve always called ourselves a place that understands non-traditional students. Now the whole world can call us that. Thanks to all of you who make Peirce a special place.
