Career Resolutions for 2011
Career Resolutions for 2011
It’s resolution season and if you are like most of us you are reflecting — giving some thought to how you can improve the quality of your personal and professional life.
Perhaps you’re considering getting more organized, losing weight, eating healthier, or saving money. Maybe you plan to do it all! Whatever you choose to do, I hope you are successful! I also hope you will consider reflecting on your career development and making some resolutions accordingly.
Now, I might not be able to help with your more personal resolutions, but I can point you in the right direction to pursue your career-based goals. MySalary.com recently published a helpful blog post, “15 Resolutions You Should Make this Year to Get Ahead.”
Here are some of my favorites:
Build your network. You know how much the CDS team at Peirce loves networking! We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Never underestimate the power of building your network. Developing a strong network is all about relationships, meeting and connecting with individuals who can broaden your professional horizons.
Perhaps it is a Peirce graduate who works in an industry that interests you, or an old colleague who moved on to a new career. Everyone has a story to share and networking is a way to open your eyes and ears to all the possibilities out there. And of course, having contacts in the career path you’re looking at is one of the best ways to get a foot in the door with a potential employer.
Change careers if you’re in a rut. At Peirce, there’s no shortage of students who were unsatisfied by their career and decided they needed to make a change in their lives to get their professional life back on track. Don’t settle! There are great opportunities in growing fields, such as healthcare, accounting, and human resource management. Get the education now that will help you land a job in one of these expanding industries.Update your skills. There are many ways to get a grasp on the skills that are most valuable to employers in your field. Continue your education, get certified, attend workshops, or take online courses.
Go back to school. Maybe you didn’t commit to college the first time around. Maybe you couldn’t finish your degree program for personal or financial reasons. Or maybe you picked a major you’re just not interested in any more. Whatever the case might be, never rule out returning to school. It’s a great way to start fresh, learn a new specialty, and change the trajectory of your professional life. And remember: There was a time when a degree could set you apart from other job applicants. But now, your resume probably won’t get a second glance without one.
Are you doing everything in your power to prepare yourself to get that job of your dreams? Does your education and training match your career goals? Have you perfected your resume, practiced interviewing, and started networking?
If you answered no to any of these questions, don’t worry! It’s never too late to take control of your future. You simply need to use all the resources at your fingertips and focus your efforts. That’s what the CDS team is here for.
We continuously advise Peirce students and alumni to take advantage of the programs and services we have available to help them prepare for the career path that is the best fit for their skills, talents, and interests. Did you make any professional resolutions for 2011? The CDS team and I would love to hear about them!
